Steeles on Wheels : A Year on the Road in an Rv
Published in Paperback by Capital Books Inc (February, 2002)
Authors: Mark Steele and Donia Steele
Average review score:

Three for the road
For anyone dreaming or considering the fulltime RV lifestyle, this is a must read. Between humorous e-mail accounts of their adventures from all three of them (Mark, Donia and Cleo the dog), the book is peppered with how-to's and explanations of how the full-time lifestyle works. And newbie or experienced RVer, you'll want pencil in hand to add new places to your list to visit. I particularly enjoyed reading about the regional foods and interesting restaurants and laughed, remembering the ajustments that must be made when downsizing into an RV. Great read!

Steeles on Wheels
'Steeles on Wheels' is a must read for anyone contemplating or already experiencing the lifestlye of freedom on the road. Donia and Mark, and Cleo have given insights to RVing through their appealing and real-life adventures. Each chapter is more fun to read than the last, especially from the perspective of Cleo! Thoroughly enjoyable! Lyn Petersen, Fulltiming since 1991.

Ride on!
This book was a great, fast read. As an outsider to the whole RV world, I felt at least a little more knowledgable after reading the book. My favorite parts of the book were the chapters in which the authors listed what they missed most about their old lifestyle, and what they love most about their new lifestyle. The Steeles (and fluffy Cleo) take you along on their journey, and it's quite an enjoyable ride!

Bless This Mess: Practical Prayers for Broken Toasters, Nosy Neighbors, Missing Socks A
Published in Paperback by Workman Publishing Company (January, 1998)
Authors: Jay Steele and Brett Bayne
Average review score:

Amazing!
I very rarely read "fiction" but once I picked this book up I could not stop reading this non-stop laugh-fest.. I have sent to it many friends who share a love for "observing" funny things... I have also learned the Mr. Steele has published another book which a family member has read, called "Stuck in the Seventies"... I look forward to reading it also.. Great job guys!

Really a lot of laughs-- something for everyone!
I thoroughly enjoyed this little book. The authors have taken a clever approach to making fun of so many of the little annoyances in modern life. It reads like a stand-up comedy routine, and it's a load of fun. I've shared this book with friends and family and it never fails to get laughs (without being offensive or sacrilegious, either!)

A clever, witty collection with some laugh-out-loud moments
I picked this book up by chance and was immediately captivated by a prayer about getting your baby to sleep through the night. Boy, I've been there! There are plenty of cute, funny prayers that focus on situations and frustrations we've all experienced. I've called many friends to share these prayers as I've read them: "Hey, Cathy, this one is perfect for you: Reflections on Sharing a Bathroom...!" Buy it, you'll enjoy it! I swear on a stack of Bibles....

Misinformed Consent: Women's Stories About Unnecessary Hysterectomy
Published in Paperback by Next Decade Inc (February, 2003)
Author: Lise Cloutier-Steele
Average review score:

Women Empowered by Knowledge
The hope that change is possible not only motivates Lise Cloutier-Steele and the women telling their stories in Misinformed Consent, but also is illustrated by the example given by Stanley West, MD, in his introduction to this book. Talking about his observation of how the disfiguring radical mastectomy has been replaced by the lumpectomy as the "gold standard" in the medical field, Dr. West states that it was not medical professionals who instigated this change: "Rather women-empowered by knowledge-stated simply that they would no longer allow a disfiguring operation to be performed when they could undergo an equally successful surgery without the negative consequences."

While for so long a blanket of silence has covered the risks and consequences of hysterectomy, it is time for change. This is not light or entertaining reading, but a courageous sharing of private pain by women who want knowledge to effect change. Each and every woman, whether or not she is personally contemplating a hysterectomy or has already experienced one herself, would benefit from reading Misinformed Consent. -Bets Davis & Lisa Martinez for "The Women's Sexual Health Foundation...this book is listed as one of our recommended resources.

Real Women with Real Stories
Misinformed Consent isn't a medical book -- although there's plenty of excellent medical information in it that will be incredibly useful to women whose doctors have suggested hysterectomy or are considering the operation on their own. Rather, it's a book by women -- real women -- for other women. Too many of the women in this book weren't seen or heard as people, as women, as individuals, by their doctors. They were given incomplete, and sometimes false, information. Now, they have banded together under Lise Cloutier-Steele to tell their stories: the stories their doctors all too often did not and would not hear. The beauty (and the sadness) of this book is that it is not mediated by doctors. It tells real stories in women's own words, and provides a thoughtful counterpart to the many medical books out there. Instead of being lumped together as just more "hysterical" women, the women in Misinformed Consent emerge as thoughtful, graceful survivors with unique stories to tell. If only their doctors had seen them as individuals, perhaps they wouldn't have needed to contribute to this book. Please read it if you're considering this surgery or know someone who is -- while it is obviously a collection of "worst-case" scenarios, it will help all women advocate for themselves and help ensure the best possible outcome should they choose to have a hysterectomy. More important, it may lead women to alternatives to surgery.

The message in this book NEEDS to be read
Misinformed Consent weaves a ribbon from story to story - the common thread - surgical castration and resultant post-operative anatomical, hormonal and psychological changes. None of the women whose stories appear here were prepared for the changes they experienced after surgery. INFORMED consent was not given to these women as crucial and pertinent information was withheld. Generations of women were silenced and made to feel they were alone is they complained after this surgery. Doctors are still denying these consequences can and DO occur FREQUENTLY. The book is not about a select few, the numbers are astounding. This information should be disseminated to women considering hysterectomy. This may well be the trailblazer publication that will begin women taking a stand against conventional medical standards that have been outdated for decades.

Making It In America - What Immigrants Know and Americans Have Forgotten
Published in Hardcover by MaxMar (01 February, 2000)
Author: Marcia A. Steele
Average review score:

You Don't Have to Be an Immigrant to Love This Book!
There are tons of lessons in this book for everybody who wants to be successful in life, not just business. Marcia Steele's writing style makes this book an easy read. I've actually read parts of it several times. It's full of great examples, advice and anecdotes. I really like the way she summarizes each chapter in just 3-5 bullets. If you read only the bullets, you'd still get a lot out of it, but read the whole book - it's worth it. Marcia reminds us what's so great about America and why immigrants are such positive influencers on our society. This book isn't just about Marcia's perspective as an immigrant(she's from Jamaica). She backs up her thoughts with statistics, studies and solid real-life examples. It's easy to see why Marcia has "made it in America!"

Inspirational!
Ms. Steele writes an inspiring book teeming with ideas for becoming successful. Not just for immigrants, Making it in America is for all of us who value self improvement and love business. This book is easy to read and comprises short chapters, each with a summary.

Inspiring and Motivating
Marcia Steele does a fantastic job exploring the components of success in 'Making It In America.' This book uses comprehendible ideas backed by real life stories to define specific concepts anyone can use to create their own personal success.

This book will motivate you to rethink your own priorities and inspire you to create your own goals for success so that you can 'Make It In America.'

Office Politics : The Women's Guide to Beat the System and Gain Financial Success
Published in Hardcover by Steel Balls Pr (August, 1994)
Authors: R. Don Steele and Mary Thomas
Average review score:

Not just for Women
Whether you are a man or a woman, if you're in the corporate world or work in an office, this is an essential book to own. It will revolutionize your earning potential. It covers all aspects of the work experience from interviewing to getting a raise to leaving successfully. His advice about how often you should switch jobs is wroth the price of the book, easily.

R. Don Steele's blunt language is a rare find in today's world, and his straightforwardness helps convey his messages. If you read this book carefully, you'll realize he truly cares about telling you everything he knows about the subject. He is clearly passionate about educating his readers, and his language and thoroughness show that.

I truly wish I had read this book before I had graduated college. I'm lucky I found it during my second job.

Office Politcs: The shortcut to business success
I'm a successful middle-aged executive who learned a lot of Office Politics the hard way. However, even I learned a lot of new things in reading it. This book is a must for women who want to succeed in the corporate world and it will definitely help men, too. Steele tells it like it is and will win no awards for political correctness. I wish I'd had this book when I was 25.

A Woman's Battle Kit...The Secret Weapon
I came to this book by chance, having read another by the author, and was impressed.

As a father of two daughters I'll ensure they get this book and understand its philosophy to survive in any corporation or small business. This is a how-to manual, anchored on a sound, practical and inventive approach to more than survival for women in any office situation. Survive, thrive and prosper is the message - and the power comes with that.

Not a sensitive and delusional New Age guide, this is a book that attacks the issues bluntly, examines them and offers practical and creative solutions for men, as well as women. Simple, direct and unshakeable solutions that work.

If you are a woman, pack it with your cosmetics. If you are a man buy it anyway and share the information with your women friends. Everyone wins.

Possibly the best, down-to-earth, clever and pragmatic guide to an age-old problem (and a thousand ways on how to overcome it) that I've read.

Three Minute Therapy: Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life
Published in Hardcover by Glenbridge Pub Ltd (April, 1997)
Authors: Michael R. Edelstein and David Ramsay Steele
Average review score:

Read this book!
One of things that I like the most about this book is it's simple approach to dealing with complex issues...like anxiety. As the title suggests, this type of work can be practiced in very short increments...say three minutes or so, and can be implemented almost immediately. Which is a lot more time and cost effective than spending months or years in therapy. Obviously, I didn't resolve my anxiety issues in three minutes, but after implementing the practices recommended in this book on a regular basis over a couple of months I was able to change the way I let situations affect me and ultimately reduce unnecessary anxiety. This book is an easy read and offers effective tools for anyone to deal with stressful and anxiety producing situations that occur in the course of everyday life. It's the best self-help book I've ever read!

depresssion to elation
The human condition head on! Finally psychological help is finding it's way to people! After forty years, cognitive therapy, and specifically, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, are proving to be the most effective means to solve depression problems beyond par. Three Minute Therapy clearly teaches how to do it. Many other cognitive books have broken through, Three Minute Therapy takes off of their foundation. Only three minutes? Michael Edelstein clearly reemphacizes that repeated work is required. But not to be daunted! He shows three minute excercises that can be done by anyone, provided they are a person seeking the truth, with willingness to consistently perform the excersices on a daily basis. And they only take three minutes. The severest depression is lifted, the severest anxiety relieved, the most violent anger assuaged. I have been so depressed that I could not get out of a chair. Congitive therapy changed all of that. Now my life is filled with problems that are predominantly practical, which I enjoy addressing. Three Minute Therapy makes it crystal clear how to do it. As the years go by these methods will become recognized as the most efficient, effective and humane to employ in all people's emotional problems. More power to Edelstein for leading those who suffer away from the doldrums of psycho-babble, into the realm of practical and joyful living. Get it. Do it. Your world will be a better place. Mick Berry

Changed my life!
Dr. Edelstein has written a simple, straightforward and very helpful book here. REBT made easy. There's gold here folks! I recommend not only the book, but also Dr. Edelstein as a therapist.

One of the things I've learned from him and his wonderful book is how to get control of my unhealthy eating habits and to start exercising. I've lost 40lbs so far, and I am continuing to lose. To get help losing weight was the reason I started therapy with him, but I got so much more out of it. I only wish I had discovered this way of thinking 20 years ago. But as I have learned, it is never too late to turn your life around.

In addition to this book, I also highly recommend Albert Ellis's "A Guide To Rational Living".

Thanks Dr. E for all the help and for writing this book!

Queen Mary
Published in Hardcover by Phaidon Press Inc. (November, 1995)
Author: James Steele
Average review score:

The Queen Mary: 1936-1967
This book is sets the standard for other books to follow in its detailed description, in text as well as photos, of the history of the Queen Mary from the years of 1936-1967, when it was retired in Long Beach, CA.

The only shortcoming of this book is that it tells little of the history of the ship after its arrival in Long Beach in 1967. Perhaps the author considers the ship to be a shell of its former self. Indeed the Queen Mary has had an exiting "life" as a tourist attraction since its last voyage in 1967.

Still, this book is a must for any fan of the Queen Mary. It is beautifully bound and the photos are priceless.

Simply a "must have" for ocean liner-buffs
"Queen Mary" by James Steele was everything i hoped it would be - and more. Although the author goes into detail with the ship's interiors to some extent, I think he told the "Mary"s overall story well. The book is packed with technical data and historic info all the way back to 1930, when this beautiful liner was ordered, until she was delivered in Long Beach, California, in 1967. Great photographs, too!

Splendid and unrivaled book on the Queen Mary!
Coloured photo's along with a history of this ship make the book not only comprehensive, but very interesting as well. The pictures alone make this book worth its cost. Highly recommended!

On Intelligence : Spies and Secrecy in an Open World
Published in Hardcover by AFCEA International Press (26 April, 2000)
Author: Robert David Steele
Average review score:

Open Source Intelligence
The author of ON INTELLIGENCE is an experienced US intelligence expert. Robert Steele's main suggestion to the Intelligence Community is augmented openness. The existing culture of secrecy needs to be changed, because its methods are not effective enough to protect US national security in the 21st century. Openness would create a new environment of understanding intelligence and detect subversive activities. Using open source intelligence means exploiting pluralistic knowledge from universities, research facilities and private companies, which is available at comparable low cost. Classified intelligence often failed to support political decisions, because the policy-maker might not be cleared for such information. Unclassified intelligence can solve this particular problem of compartmentalized dissemination. Therefore, the author advises to link classified information with national competitiveness, making intelligence the apex of the knowledge infrastructure. Part three of his book lays out the core concept of "Creating a Smart Nation" through "Presidential Intelligence".

Steele Uses His Intelligence
Robert Steele's book is an excellent companion for any intelligence officer. Steele's insight comes from many years of experience, much of it trying to beat down old paradigms, out dated ideas and dogma at departmental and government level.

"On Intelligence" is written from the 'bottom up' with a 'top down' brain and shows a passion for, and knowledge of, a subject which few can aspire to.

Anyone buying this book will be amazed at the depth and richness of it's content. Each page is packed with gems of intelligence, insight and planning.

I found myself revisiting my concept of the Intelligent World as passage after passage challenged my conventional perceptions and made me re-think much of what I held to be correct. It's a shame that such vision may not be fully appreciated until ALL dinosaurs are extinct!

Intelligence Transformation
The author of this book has produced one of the very best and most interesting books to date on intelligence reform and transformation. It is extremely well written and provokingly thoughtful on many critical issues as we decide what we want from our Intelligence Community in the 21st Century and how we want to achieve those results. His economic, business and organizational logic is right on track for a wide range of relevant and timely topics. One is amazed at how much detail the author provided without getting the reader "lost in the trees with no sense of the forest". His reference approach is also outstanding in two regards: (1) he carefully documents the source of many of the great authors and thinkers and practitioners sited, and (2) he gives the reader access to a much broader set of view points (some of which no doubt conflict with his own views). Whether you agree with all of Steele's ideas or not is irrelevant. This is just excellent stuff and should be required reading for all members and staff of all of the Congressional oversight committees as well as the various commissions that review aspects of one sort or another of our national intelligence community. Beyond that it will undoubtedly be of interest to anyone who is concerned about the role of Intelligence in National Security.

Steele Trapp Mind
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (September, 2001)
Author: Tim Cagle
Average review score:

If you like to laugh, this book is for you!
"Steele Trapp Mind" is probably the funniest book I've ever read--it's one laugh after another, from beginning to end! I've known the author for over 35 years, and this book IS Tim Cagle . . . reading it is just like having a beer with him (and you'd undoubtedly have to pay for Tim's beer too)! Buy the book and have a ball--you can thank me later! I can't wait for his next novel . . . I just don't want to be IN it!

A Great Story With A Million Laughs
This is a wonderful story about love and music. The characters will make you scream with laughter. This book is one laugh after another from start to finish. I recommend it for anyone who needs a break from the real world. This definitely needs to be a movie!! I give it the highest rating.

What a writer!!!
It's great to laugh again with a football based story. The BEST since Dan Jenkin's "Semi-Tough". It is particularly special when one's life experiences allow them to identify with some of the characters. I recognized several clones of past acquaintances.
